Established in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained online.
